Thrive:
A Physical Therapist’s Guide to Longevity

Add Years to Your Life. And Life to Your Years.

Origin Story

As a young child, my great grandfather felt larger than life. He had come to the United States from Italy with nothing, enduring years of gruelling work in the coal mines so he could eventually bring his family over and give them a better future. Despite the language barrier, I admired everything about him. His strength, his principles, his courage, and the way he stood up for what was right. To me, he was a symbol of resilience and possibility, and I wanted to grow up to be just like him.

Years later, I saw a very different side of that same man. Visiting him in the hospital, I was confronted with how much his body had changed. The strength I once admired had faded, replaced by frailty and struggle. That moment stayed with me. It shaped how I thought about health, ageing, and the choices we make over a lifetime. From that day on, I became driven to understand how we can grow older while maintaining strength, independence, and vitality, a question that has guided my work and ultimately led to this book.

The Problem

As we move through our 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, many people begin to notice subtle changes in how their body feels and performs. What once felt easy can start to require more effort, and small limitations can slowly build over time.

These changes are common, but they are not something you simply have to accept. In fact, they are often early signals that your body needs a different approach to movement, strength, and recovery.

If you’re like many active adults, you may be experiencing:

  • increasing stiffness or lingering aches that don’t fully go away
  • a growing fear of injury when exercising or trying something new
  • a sense that your body is slowing down compared to before
  • concern about losing independence or not being able to stay active long term

Left unaddressed, these challenges can gradually impact confidence, activity levels, and overall quality of life. But with the right guidance and approach, they can be understood and improved.

At the heart of everything in Thrive is a simple but powerful truth:

Your genes are not your destiny. Your lifestyle plays a major role in how you age.

While genetics may set the stage, it is your daily choices that shape how your body moves, feels, and performs over time. The habits you build, the way you stay active, and how you support your body all influence what the years ahead look like.

You have far more control than you think.

Small, consistent actions can lead to meaningful changes. With the right approach, it is possible to stay strong, capable, and active well into later life.
